Class 2000
MassMutual Young Entrepreneurial Scholar
Kevin Hanks
Kevin is also receiving the first MassMutual Young Entrepreneurial Scholar Award, with $500 which he can use toward his college education or to further his business operations.
A resident of Wilbraham, Kevin is a student at Minnechaug High School. Last March he travelled to new York City to be honored as one of only 17 students selected from 29,000 across the United States by the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship. Kevin was named a Young Entrepreneur of the Year, in recognition of his entrepreneurship knowledge and impressive business success. When Kevin was 13, a neighbor gave him eight unusable bicycles that had been gathering dust in a shed. Kevin repaired five of the bikes, and wheeled them out to his front yard with a For Sale sign. Now Kevin’s business, Mass-Bike, has become a company that specializes in selling rebuilt racing bikes over the Internet. He sells half a dozen refurbished bicycles a week to customers all over the country through an online auction site. Kevin figures a week’s posting costs less than a newspaper ad, and with the customer paying the UPS charges, Kevin says, “If I had the inventory, I could do $1200 to $1300 a week in revenue and gross $875-$900.â€
